A writing app for novelists that keeps characters, places and chapters organized in plain files they own.
Mythos is a local-first writer's IDE for novelists building multi-book, relational fiction worlds. The engine (mythoside-core) is a six-crate Rust workspace that models manuscripts as plain Markdown + YAML files on disk and exposes them over JSON-RPC on stdio; the desktop client (mythoside-ts) is a Tauri 2 + React 19 + TypeScript app that runs the engine as a sidecar process.
Mythos treats a manuscript as a structured narrative data model inside a Series → Book → Chapter → Scene hierarchy. This structure is represented as plain Markdown and YAML files so the source of truth always remains on the author's disk, readable independently of any tool. The Rust engine never opens a network port; it talks to the desktop client strictly over stdin/stdout via JSON-RPC. A local SQLite + FTS5 index planned for fast cross-referencing is not yet built.
Key Highlights
- Structured Series → Book → Chapter → Scene hierarchy for multi-book manuscripts.
- Local-first architecture: manuscripts are tool-independent Markdown + YAML files, always on the author's disk.
- Rust engine and Tauri/React client communicate over stdio — the engine never opens a network port.
- Local SQLite + FTS5 index for cross-referencing and fast queries is on the roadmap.
